Las Vegas, Nevada | 2011
When I moved to Las Vegas, I started spending a lot of time photographing downtown and the surrounding areas. I walked. I drove. I looked. And one of the things I started noticing were bail bond businesses. They seemed to be everywhere.
I don't remember noticing them growing up in Ohio, so I was fascinated. Turns out they were there too. Then I started seeing them in New Mexico, Florida, everywhere I explored. I started photographing the exteriors and just kept going. I have years of these images now. I haven't really done anything with them yet, but I know there is something there.
With this photograph, what gets me is everything happening between me and that orange wall. The fences keep stacking up, one after another. Then there is this old-school black-and-white prisoner painted on the wall, popping out against all that orange. Add the blue sky and that strip of blue along the bottom and somehow everything just works.
The fence keeps me out, but it also makes the photograph.
